The Cable Row Machine is a pulling exercise that works the muscles of the back in general, specifically the latissimus dorsi, also known as the “lats.” It also works the forearm and upper arm muscles, as the biceps and triceps are dynamic stabilizers for this exercise. Other stabilizing muscles that come into play are the hamstrings and gluteus maximus.
This exercise is more for strength development than an aerobic rowing exercise. Although it’s called a row, it’s not the classic rowing motion you might use in aerobic rowing. It’s a functional exercise because you’re throwing objects at your chest several times daily. Learning to contract your abs and use your legs while keeping your back straight can prevent strain and injury. You can also use this straight-back form with tight abdominal muscles for squats and deadlifts.
