What Exactly Does A Mental Health Coach Do? And How Can You Become One

Mental health coaching is a relatively new field that is growing in popularity. But what does a mental health coach do? And how can you become one? In this post, we will explore what mental health coaching is and what types of services mental health coaches provide. We will also discuss the training and certification required to become a mental health coach and explore some of the details of this career.

What Is Mental Health Coaching?

A mental health coach is a professional who helps people with mental illness manage their condition and improve their quality of life. However, Mental health coaches work with clients to set goals, develop coping strategies, and find resources to support their recovery.

They may also provide individual or group therapy and case management services. Mental health coaches are typically part of a team of mental health professionals who collaborate closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. In addition to providing direct services to clients, mental health coaches also play an essential role in public education and advocacy.

They may provide mental illness and recovery training or participate in community events to raise awareness about mental health issues. Ultimately, mental health coaches play a vital role in helping people with mental illness live full and productive lives.

How Is A Mental Health Coach Different Than A Therapist?

A mental health coach and a therapist support people with mental health concerns, but they do so differently. A mental health coach helps people identify and achieve their goals, providing accountability and encouragement. They may also offer guidance on lifestyle choices, such as nutrition and exercise, that can improve mental well-being.

In contrast, a therapist provides professional treatment for mental health concerns. This may include talk therapy, medication, or other forms of treatment. While a mental health coach can be essential in supporting someone’s mental health journey, only a therapist can provide professional treatment.

How To Become A Mental Health Coach

If you’re interested in becoming a mental health coach, you’ll need to undergo training first. The good news is that this training will give you five different certifications. The first certification is for NLP-Integrated Life Coach Training, which requires 170 hours of study.

Next, you’ll need to complete ICF Coach Mentoring, which entails ten hours of study. After that, you’ll be ready for Master Coach Training, a 22-hour commitment. Finally, you’ll need to complete Mental Health Coach Training, which requires 40 hours of study.

By the end of this process, you’ll be well-equipped to help others as a mental health coach. Plus, you’ll have the bonus of meeting the training and mentoring requirements for the ICF, ACC, and PCC credentials.

Becoming A Mental Health Coach: In Closing
